It's official.  On this Friday morning, January 14th, every single football program in the FBS now has a head coach.  The carousel has stopped spinning for now.  The latest team to name its new head coach is Tulsa, who had to replace Todd Graham after he left to take the Pitt job.  The news broke on Friday morning that Tulsa will hire Bill Blankenship to take over the football program.

If you're anything like me, you're reaction to this news may have been along the lines of "who?"  Well, let me tell you a bit about Bill Blankenship.  He served as Tulsa's associate head coach last season, but has been coaching at the school for the last four seasons.  He spent three of those seasons coaching special teams, and has also coached the running backs and wide receivers.

Blankenship also played quarterback at Tulsa, and though this will be his first head coaching job on the college level, he spent 22 years as a head coach on the high school level.  In those 22 seasons, Blankenship's high school teams reached the state championship game seven times, winning three of them, and he was inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2009.

Bill is a great guy and knows the lay of the land at Tulsa as well as anybody. He knows exactly the type of players that will fit in there and should be able to put together a solid coaching staff that will allow Tulsa to continue their recent stretch of successful seasons.

His relationship with the high school coaching community in Oklahoma will be a tremendous asset to the Hurricane program and will assure them that their players will be able to develop at the college level under top notch coaches that have great character and integrity.

Interesting dark-horse-candidate hire.

This guy was an astounding coach at Tulsa Union High School. He has been great at not only recruiting locally (especially at Jenks and Union High Schools), but also at working with those schools to prepare their football players for div-1 football.

Recent recruits from Jenks and Union have contributed at OU, OSU & Tulsa like never before. Bill Blankenship's son was the starting QB of Tulsa around the early 2000's.

Tulsa got this guy super cheap (<$500K!) and Tulsa gets $2 million buyout from Pitt hiring Todd Graham. Financially, it makes a lot of since for a school with limited football revenue. Tulsa spends more on football per student than any program in the nation besides Notre Dame. Tulsa has less than 10,000 alumni in the Tulsa area. Tulsa has to compete with OU & Okahoma State in order to get casual fans.

If this guy can win 10+ games next year (and he should considering Tulsa's top-25 finish & 90% of key players returning), watch out BCS! Wink

GO TULSA!!!
