Here's the good news for Ohio State: none of the players involved in the NCAA violations the school was investigating will be suspended for the Sugar Bowl.  The bad news is that Ohio State's chances at getting back to a BCS bowl in 2011 took quite a hit on Thursday, as according to an NCAA release, five players have been suspended for five games in 2011.

Including quarterback Terrelle Pryor.  The other four players suspended are RB Dan Herron, WR DeVier Posey, OT Mike Adams and DE Solomon Thomas.

The reports first surfaced earlier this week saying that the players had received free tattoos in exchange for autographs, but it seems the players went a bit further than that.  They did pay for the tattoos, it's just they apparently sold trophies and rings to get them.  According to the release, Pryor has to repay $2,500 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring, his 2009 Fiesta Bowl sportsmanship award and 2008 gold pants.

Dan Herron must pay back $1,150 for selling his jersey, pants and shoes for $1,000 and receiving $150 in "discounted services."  Posey owes $1,250 for selling his 2008 Big Ten ring for $1,200 and another $50 for those "discounted services."

All the payments will be made to charities.

“We were not as explicit with our student-athlete education as we should have been in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years regarding the sale of apparel, awards and gifts issued by the athletics department,” said athletic director Gene Smith in the release. “We began to significantly improve our education in November of 2009 to address these issues. After going through this experience, we will further enhance our education for all our student-athletes as we move forward.”

Another player, Jordan Whiting, was also suspended next season, but only for a game and he must repay $150 to charity.

and please don't think that i am happy that they r potentially suspended for the miami game next year...that is not what i want or any cane fan wants...we want to play *osu when they have all of their starters, cause one can only imagine it these guys don't play and miami wins...then it will be about how u lost but were not at full strength...miami wants to win this game against *osu's best players...(but it is impossible if they don't know the rules)  and no one except the athletic department and the compliance department can help with that...and they have obviously failed.

might agree with the end of ur comment if they weren't educated (or supposedly educated) by the compliance department at the university...that is where this story gets bad...not from the kids and the parents, but from the university that doesn't teach these kids what is right and what is wrong according to the ncaa (na matter how bush league the ncaa is)...

quit ur crying...u guys got busted and now have to pay the price...doesnt matter what u want to say, nearly every kid in college has parents that are hurting based on the economy...oh well, i guess the rest of the parents are trying harder to work and not sit on their a$$ and get money from their kids, who r technically still amateur atheletes (as bad as i think that is).  i am not pounding on the parents or really even the kids, but more the institution, who has the largest compliance department known to man kind, yet still can't teach kids what is right and what is wrong...and now u have to face the music...sorry...might want to talk to the AD about who he employs, and tell him to get it right in the future...and if u don't want to do that, get a better backup qb if that is ur biggest worry...OMG...

Remember these kids were all Freshman when this occured. I truly dont give a sh++++t. I want them to pound Arkansas. The SEC has been pulling this stuff forever and just gotten somwhat better at hiding it. Do you even think it is comparable what Cam Newton and his father did to what the OSU players did. Not even close. The University Presidents need to TELL the NCAA what to do.

My question would be. When do these awards and other things really become theirs? If they earned them then they should be allowed to do whatever they want with them. As you might be able to tell I am a Buckeye Fan and I don't like what they did, but I don't beleive anybody physically got hurt. Did they? So OSU's reputation took a hit, just like USC, Auburn and others in the past. It's not the first time and it probably won't be the last among the big schools athletic programs. These are young men and not the President of a college or the CEO of a company and they will make mistakes like we may have made when we were young. Yell

If the punishment stands these guys are gone next season.  The initial story said they needed the money to help their families.  Was that wishful thinking or Ohio State propaganda?
The good think is they weren't wasting their money on books to read over Christmas, helping some people get blankets or coats for the winter, but instead were getting tatoos.
It might have sounded better if they were bar hopping and gambling rather than waiting for the big money and the quality tats.  Idiots.

These guys deserve to sit. How can you be ineligible for the first half of next season but yet be eligible for the Sugar Bowl? I think we all have our theories but none of them have anything to do with the concept of fairness.

I think I get it, you can have your parent solicit a quarter of a million dollars (but of course never receive it) deny it never happened (which we all believe--of course) yet you sell rings & other items for hundreds to a couple of thousand dollars & get suspended for 5 games but not the upcoming & all important Sugar Bowl--which we know you can't do that because that would hurt the advertising revenue for the NCAA.
