Multiple media reports, including this one from the Tuscaloosa News , have indicated that new Florida coach Will Muschamp has offered the Gators' defensive coordinating position to friend and fellow Nick Saban disciple Kirby Smart, the current Alabama defensive coordinator.

Though there's a good chance Smart accepts, it appears that as of this writing no decision has been made . A "yes," however, would be a huge coup for Muschamp and the Gators, simultaneously giving them what would likely qualify as the most well-respected defensive brain trust in the country -- with both Muschamp and Smart at the very top of their field -- and weakening the Tide program still generally seen as the Gators' biggest long-term hurdle to the SEC championship.

As for why Smart has emerged in a tug-of-war between two of the nation's biggest programs, the 2009 Broyles Award winner has been learning from Saban for the past four seasons and in his two years at the Tide defensive coordinator has overseen first the national title-winning, No. 2 in total defense-ranking, life-strangling unit that paced Alabama in 2009, and this year the nation's sixth-ranked defense despite the loss of a whopping 10 starters from the '09 world-beaters. The Georgia alumnus was heavily pursued by Mark Richt to fill the Dawgs' open defensive coordinator's chair last offseason, but elected to take a raise and stay in Tuscaloosa.

If Muschamp succeeds where Richt failed, the new coaching era at Florida will have gotten off to just about the most smashing start Gator fans might have hoped for.

I could be wrong, but I think Kirby signed an agreement that he would only leave Bama if it were for a head coaching job.......

Hey Scottyd5, just FYI, Bama is in the SEC West.  And though they aren't tops in that division this year, they are better than Florida, both in record, and in head to head beat down.  Roll Tide.

Kirby...get smart!  Pack up and go unless UGA turns Richt loose in the next couple of weeks which is not out of the realm of possiblility.  UGA has waited a long time for mensa Richt to earn his keep(he does have cool sunglasses though).   Losing to Florida with such regularity is getting old, mediocrity is getting old.  Florida is serious about returning to greatness...hop on board!

I'm a Florida fan and I wouldn't make the move if I were him.  But most of you Bama fans on here are hilarious.  You would think the Tide is playing for the Nat'l Championship again.  Last I checked they were 4th in the SEC East.  But if you want to coach with your boy, what's wrong with a lateral move?  Smart will be a HC in 2 years, regardless of where he is.  It's not like Urban is leaving a bare cupboard, they are loaded on the defense.  They were put in such horrible spots all year by an inept offense.

And as far as a defensive coach being successful at Florida, that is just ignorant.  In the last 30 years or so, which is as long as I've followed them, Zook is the only defensive minded head coach and he sucked.  So what?  Zook still had as much or more success than any of Bama's coaches between Stallings and Saban.  And what does that say about the possibility of a defensive coach being able to suceed in Gainesville?  Nothing.  You think Saban couldn't have won there?  Of course he would have.

I hope Smart comes to Gainesville, but he'll be the HC in Athens in 2 years when Richt gets run out.  And most of you are right, I'm WAY more concerned about the OC...  God I hope it's not Applewhite.
